Saturday 20th September away to Witney Town

Saturday saw us travel to Witney Town for the 2nd leg of the Barney Shield.  The weather forecast was extremely unfavourable with heavy rain scheduled for most of the afternoon but, as it happened we managed to get a full 18 ends in with just a couple of short sharp showers.  We carried over a 17 shot advantage and extended this  even further with an 86-64 victory, meaning that we retain the shield for another year.

Rink 1  -  Lead  -  Dan Wegerhoff

               No. 2  -  Dave Drinkwater

               No. 3  -  Phil French

               Skip    -  Phil Gladden

After trailing 4-3 at the end of the third end, Phil's rink only allowed the opposition to win a further 4 ends and came away with a comfortable victory 18-11

Rink 2  -  Lead  -  John Standen

               No. 2  -  Claudia Stokes

               No. 3  -  Nigel Eley

               Skip    -  Ted Eley

Ted's rink was always in control, even though they lulled the opposition into thinking they were in with a shout being only 3 shots down with 4 ends to play, but we then took the last 4 ends and came away with another comfortable win 20-10.

Rink 3  -  Lead  -  Pau; Jelfs

               No. 2  -  FinlayJelfs

               No. 3  -  Pete Griffin

               Skip    -  Dave Bryant

Another comfortable win from Dave's rink with a score of 19-10.

Rink  4  -  Lead  -  Yvonne Twomey

                No  2  -  Tony Bird

                No. 3  -  Pete Wells

                Skip    -  Chris Twomey

This was  very tight game and with 4 ends to play Chris's rink were leading by just 1 shot but, like Ted's rink they won the last 4 ends and came away victorious 18-11.

Rink  6  -  Lead  -  Sandra Shallis

                No. 2  -  Chris Shallis

                No. 3  -  Mark Stokes

                Skip  -    Bryan Ogilvie

With 6 ends to play the Captains rink were only 2 shots adrift but they then conceded a 5 and a 4 on ends 14 and 15 and could not come back from this and eventually lost 11-22.

A very good result overall which means we retain the Barney Shield for another year.

Saturday 13th September at home to Buckingham West End

Saturday saw us entertain Buckingham West End for our return game when we visited them on 17 May.  The weather looked 'iffy' and we had a short shower before the game started but, fortunately we were very lucky and managed to play a full 18 ends without any interuption and although we lost 3 of the 5 triples we came out winners 76-70, making it a double, as we won when we visited them 81-78.

Rink 1  -  Lead  -  Tony Bird

               No. 2  -  Paul Jones

               Skip    -  Pete Griffin

A very tight game throughout and, although we won 10 of the 18 ends we lost the game 14-16, losing 5 shots over the final 2 ends.

Rink 2  -  Lead  -  Sandra Shallis

               No. 2  -  Chris Shallis

               Skip    -  Bryan Ogilvie

After 7 ends the Captains triple were 6-5 down but after that only allowed the visitors to win 2 of the remaining 11 ends and went on to win 19-9.

Rink 3  -  Lead  -  Richard Lawrence

               No. 2  -  Mick Wilkins

               Skip    -  Phil French

Another very tight game with both teams sharing the ends 9-9 and, after 11 ends we were just 1 shot adrift, but we conceded a 5 on the 12th end and could not make this up over the final 6 ends and went down 10-16.

Rink  4  -  Lead  -  Dave Drinkwater

                No. 2  -  Pete Wells

                Skip    -  Mark Stokes

Another close game over the first 9 ends, when we were leading 6-4, but two 4's and a 3 over the final 9 ends saw us win quite comfortably 20-9.

Rink  5  -  Lead  -  Yvonne Twomey

                No. 2  -  John Standen

                Skip    -  Chris Twomey

Again this was a game of two halves as, after 9 ends the score was 7-7, but we conceded a 7 on the 11th end and this made all the difference as we went down by those 7 shots 13-20.

Both home and away games finished extremely close and over the 2 games there was only 9 shots in it.  A very competitive but friendly game and a team we can guarantee will bring 5 triples when they visit us here at Adderbury.

Saturday 6th September away to Witney Mills

Saturday saw us travel to Witney Mills for our return game.  Following the rather unsettled weather of the week, Saturdays game was played in warm and sunny conditions.  It was a tight game on all 4 rinks but we managed to win 63-51.

Rink 2  -  Lead  -  Yvonne Twomey

               No. 2  -  Steve Clarke

               No. 3  -  Chris Shallis

               Skip    -  Chris Twomey

A very close game up until the 11th end, when the score was 9-10, but we then went on to win 6 of the remaining 7 ends and came away victorious 19-11.

Rink 3  -  Lead  -  Dave Drinkwater

               No. 2  -  Paul Jones

               No. 3  -  Pete Griffin

               Skip    -  Dave Bryant

A very close game throughout, but with 2 ends to play we were losing 17-11, however we picked up 4 shots over the final 2 ends and only lost by 2 shots 17-15.

Rink 4  -  Lead  -  Sandra Shallis

               No. 2  -  Claudia Stokes

               No. 3  -  Tony Bird

               Skip    -  Bryan Ogilvie

At the half way point it looked as though the Captains rink were going to have a comfortable win, leading 10-3, unfortunately the wheels came off after this and going into the final end the scores were level and we lost the last end by 1 shot and therefore lost the game 12-13.

Rink 5  -  Lead  -  Jill Hart

               No. 2  -  Finley Jelfs

               No. 3  -  Mark Stokes

               Skip    -  Mick Jelfs

After 5 ends we were trailing 3-5, but after this we only let the opposition win 4 of the remaining 13 ends and went on to win comfortably 17-10.

A very enjoyable game, taking revenge from our defeat in June when they came to Adderbury.

Thursday 4th September away at Banbury Central 16.00 start.

We arrived to a monsoon which thankfully cleared to leave a pleasant evening which made the green a little heavy which was not surprising considering the rain over the past nine days.  We brought a nine point victory from the home leg on 24th June and the result on the evening was two triples to Adderbury and three to Central which enabled our hosts to claim an eight point victory 86 - 78.  The Captain, thinking on his feet and with his banker's hat on, advised everyone that this result gave us a one point winning margin for the year and we could therefore claim the bragging right, singular!

Rink 2

Dave Drinkwater, Mick Wilkins and Ted Eley were well matched with their opposition but 11 ends saw them come home in front 15 - 13.

Rink 3

Steve Clarke, Mick Jelfs and Bryan Ogilvie could have walked on water, which perhaps they did, as they only lost five ends to hand in an impressive card with an 18 point winning margin 28 - 10.

Rink 4

Yvonne Twomey, Peter Wells and Chris Twomey were in the lead for half the game but then the wheels fell off as they came in second 12 - 21.

Rink 5

Jill Hart, Phil French and Dave Bryant were up against tough opposition, and despite scoring two fours and a three, came in six points down 13 - 19.

Rink 6

Paul Christmas, Richard Lawrence and Pete Griffin had a wretched time at the hands of Nigel Galletly and took seven ends but limped in 10 - 23.

Overall an enjoyable evening with a close result and the final report from the Mid Week Captain for 2025 who would like to thank everyone for playing in the squad, with some being drafted in at short notice.

Tuesday 2nd September away at Bloxham

We made our annual pilgrimage to the B B C, not the well known broadcaster, to renew  acquaintances for the second time in 72 hours.  It was a pretty dismal evening on the weather front but we managed to play 16 ends and came away with a four rink victory 77 - 39

Rink 1

Steve Clarke, Mick Wilkins, Peter Wells and Phil Gladden were well in control picking up 11 ends to hand in score of 22 - 9.

Rink 2

Paul Jones, Richard Lawrence, Pat Clements and Bryan Ogilvie could only manage to win six ends but a magnificent 7 on the seventh end made all the difference to see them over the line 14 - 12.

Rink 3

Jill Hart, Finlay Jelfs, Mick Jelfs and Nigel Eley showed their class by only giving away four ends and kept the pressure on to come out victors 27 - 6.

Rink 4

Yvonne Twomey, Chris Twomey, Dave Bryant and Iain Mobbs had a challenging rink which "fell away to one side" and only managed seven ends but a slightly better scoring rate saw them home 14 - 12.

Saturday 30th August Home to Bloxham

Saturday saw us entertain our near neighbours Bloxham.  The forecast was not good but fortunately we managed to get in a full game, 2 of the rinks playing 18 ends and 2 rinks playing 17 before the rain got the better of us.  However, the game was enjoyed by all, more so for us, as we won all 4 rinks and came home comfortable winners 79-31.  No doubt they will want to gain their revenge, as we go to Bloxham this coming Tuesday, weather permitting.

Rink 1  -  Lead  -  Jill Hart

               No. 2  -  Tony Bird

               No. 3  -  Pete Wells

               Skip    -  Dave Bryant

Dave's rink were never in any danger, allowing the opposition to win only 4 of the 18 ends played and came home commanding winners 23-5.

Rink 2  -  Lead  -  Steve Clarke

               No. 2  -  Dave Drinkwater

               No. 3  -  Phil French

               Skip    -  Iain Mobbs

Iain's rink, like Dave's rink, were always in control and the result was never in doubt and they came home comfortable winners 19-11.

Rink 3  -  Lead  -  Yvonne Twomey

               No. 2  -  Chris Shallis

               No. 3  -  Mick Wilkins

               Skip    -  Chris Twomey

Chris's rink looked as though they were dead and buried as, after 11 ends they were trailing 9-2 but from the jaws of defeat they turned the game completely on its head, scoring 19 shots over the final 6 ends to claim an unbelievable victory 21-10.

Rink 4  -  Lead  -  Sandra Shallis

               No. 2  -  John Stnanden

               No. 3  =  Richard Lawrence

               Skip    -  Bryan Ogilvie

Although the Captain;s rink only allowed the opposition to win 5 of the 17 ends the game was closer than the result appeared, with the final result being a win 16-5.

A big thank you, again to both Jenny for looking after the bar and Chris and Maggie for setting up the club house prior to the game.
